The coastal treks are for the more adventurous traveler looking for something more physical. The coastal treks are a guided backpacking excursion that allows the guests
to view and experience other remote and unexplored areas of the coast of Katmai National Park. A Hallo Bay Naturalist Guide will lead you to some of the most beautiful
and scenic areas of the Katmai coast. Only those of sound mind and body, and with
prior backpacking experience and a passion for adventure should consider these trips.

Our number one priority will always be the safety of our clients and secondly to have
no adverse affect on the behavior or the well being of the bears or any other wildlife while leaving no trace of our presence.

Your trip will be led by one of Hallo Bay's experienced wilderness guides who are familiar with the local conditions, the weather and the wildlife of the Katmai coast. Our guides are also skilled in wilderness lore, emergency wilderness medical training and evacuation techniques. Additionally your guide will be carrying radio and satellite communication equipment which he will use to maintain regular scheduled communication with Hallo Bay Wilderness Camp as an added measure of safety.

Our 3 day Coastal Trek package begins when you board the bush plane in Homer for
your flight to Katmai. The enjoyable and scenic flight will be approximately one hour in duration prior to arriving at the coastal jump off point. A little time is utilized to familiarize yourselves with your starting point and testing the communication equipment, we will then begin our journey along the coast to our first night's camp. Our days will be spent hiking 4-10 miles per day along the coast, stopping often to explore, view wildlife and relax. As we hike and trek along the coast, we will set up our camp each evening in a safe, comfortable location. Our last morning hike will have us arriving at Hallo Bay Wilderness Camp where we will meet our flight returning to Homer.

The Hallo Bay Camp based tours lend themselves far better to photographic opportunities of the bears than the coastal treks. The coastal trek will give the guest the opportunity for scenic and some wildlife photography but if your interest is in bear photography, the coastal trek would not be the best choice.

Where will we be hiking to?

We have a variety of coastal routes to choose from on the treks. These individual routes vary, requiring 4-10 miles per day of hiking. Other factors such as tides, weather and volcanic activity as well as physical ability of the participants will determine the particular route chosen.

How tough are the hikes?

Our hikes vary from day to day and place to place. To play it safe and to make sure you know what you will need to do, expect on a typical day to hike up to four to ten miles in varying terrain from soft sand to muddy flats to creek crossings. This is not a walk in the park!! You will hike up and down hills and be walking on several different grades in any given day. We suggest you “shape up” for your trip by hiking in your local wilderness first to see how you do. This may be your nearest beach, local mountain range, or maybe nearby desert. Your Hallo Bay Guide does not want to force you on a “Death March” by any means. We will walk at a leisurely speed in the most comfortable fashion available, but yes, each day will be a hike.

How long are the hikes?

We will hike between 4 to 10 miles per day over rocky beach terrain, ford frigid glacial rivers up to 3 feet deep and will be at the mercy of the area's unpredictable weather.

What will we see on this trip?

- brown bears
- fox
- eagles
- moose
- otter

- back country bear safety

- food storage
- camp placement

guests to bring, always with the consideration of the weight you will be carrying.

We operate an environmentally friendly eco camp. All products that we use and that
the guests use have to have the environmentally friendly label on every product or you will not be able to use it on the coastal trek. You can purchase environmentally friendly shampoos and bath soap products at local health food stores or sporting goods stores
in your area or in Homer before you fly out to our camp.

Hallo Bay retains the right to change this itinerary without notice.
