Hallo Bay Team Goes to London

The Hallo Bay Team will be in London again for the Times/BBC “Destinations” Travel Expo held in early February. The “Destinations” expo, held in London at Earl’s Court, is the longest running travel expo of its kind. Of course, additional days will be worked into the itinerary for everyone to adjust to the large time difference while visiting some of London’s fabulous sights.

New Optional Marine Tours from Hallo Bay Camp

Capt. Terry Johnson who up until last season conducted Walrus tours in the Bearing Sea has now joined with
Hallo Bay Camp to provide his skills and the services of his research vessel MV Inconnu to our guests and various agencies conducting coastal research in Katmai National Park. He is a professor with the University of Alaska’s fisheries extension program, a marine safety and survival instructor, a Coast Guard licensed Master, and author
of two books and numerous articles on boats, fisheries, and Alaska’s marine wildlife. www.alaskawildlifeboat.com

Daily Weather Forecast from Hallo Bay

Hallo Bay will again be providing daily 6:00 AM weather reports and updates to Alaska owned and operated aviation businesses conducting passenger flights along the Katmai coast and to State and Federal Enforcement Agencies starting May 15, 2008. The advent of our new 24 hour robotic weather camera and reporting software
will add still another measure of safety to those Alaska based operations conducting business on the coast.

The “Tigger” Forecast

For those not familiar, the “Tigger Forecast” is a unique forecast reported by the Hallo Bay office regarding the office cat which has the uncanny animal ability to indicate a weather change. When Tigger (the cat) rolls over
on her back with all four feet in the air for extended lengths of time, the weather has shown to change for the worse within 12 hours. She has proven the accuracy of this beyond that of NOAA, so much that we have been requested to include it with the outgoing morning weather reports.

Now Celebrating 20 Years (1988-2008) of Guiding People to the Bears of Katmai

Today, it seems like 1988 was only yesterday when I guided my first group of clients on a 3 day pack trip to the Coast of Katmai to photograph the bears. Supplied with 7 days of food, gear, radio and a good contingency plan we were dropped off on the beach at Hallo Bay. We unloaded our gear and the floatplane took off with the plan
to return in 3 days weather permitting. We hiked a short distance from the beach to a small rise to get a better look around us. We were stunned! From where we sat we counted 42 bears grazing in the large sedge meadows within sight of us! Never before having such a large number of bears in close proximity, we moved a more distant spot to spend our first night. In the days following we cautiously observed the bears and studied their reactions
to us. At no point then, or do I today, believe the bears want to be anyone’s friend, rather they are a majestic
and dominant species surviving on this wild, weather whipped, Pacific coast of glaciers and active volcanoes.
We as humans must respect this last stronghold of the bears, to challenge it, will destroy it, thus it is best we
as humans take our proper place and allow the bears to be wild. These were my thoughts that day in 1988 and they have guided me for 20 years.
