The Volunteer and Work
Study Program
The Hallo Bay Wilderness Volunteer Program is designed to offer individuals
of any age or walk of life an opportunity to gain a unique personal experiences,
knowledge and education. This opportunity is offered
within an example setting, sustainable use wilderness operation that would
not otherwise be available
or cost effective as a learning tool.
There are several major criteria for the Hallo Bay Wilderness Volunteer
Program. One is the potential ability
and desire of the selected applicants to pass on the knowledge, education
and experiences gained in this
program to others in a beneficial manner.
The Hallo Bay Wilderness Volunteer Program is not for the person expecting
a "laid back" experience or
desiring a minimal working holiday. The Volunteer Program is for those
individuals possessing a strong
character, determination, common sense and the moral fortitude to learn
from this experience, improve
on it and pass on first hand knowledge to others for the benefit wildlife
everywhere.
Hallo Bay Wilderness is offering a Volunteer Program to provide individuals
the opportunity to live and
interact in a remote Alaska wilderness environment. Volunteers can participate
in a one month term project
or serve over several months in exchange for transportation from Homer,
full room and board.
It is important that Volunteers understand that they will be working within
brown bear habitat where bears
are encountered daily. Volunteers will receive intensive educational and
training on how to work and coexist
safely with bears. It is a serious responsibility to maintain the camp
facilities in a required manner to deny
those bears wandering near the camp area the opportunity to make a human
food relationship.
The type of work duties a Volunteer is required to perform are many and
varied. Your special talents and
skills may be utilized to enhance the positive experience shared by guests
of Hallo Bay Wilderness. In the
daily operation, Volunteers are required to maintain the high standards
established to assure the safety
